ANESTHESIOLOGY
Field of the medicine that studies the phenomena of artificially induced anesthesia.
The IPO Hospital Anesthesiology service is formed of ten medical anesthesiologists, with extensive experience in Otorhinolaryngologic Surgery (ear, nose and throat).
They perform a very important role in our search for positive results in all of the surgical procedures carried out in the Hospital.
A small part of our surgeries are carried out with general anesthesia and a large part of them with local anesthesia and local + sedation, this being one of our main differences. In this way the patients recover more quickly from both the anesthesia and the surgery itself.
Upon being diagnosed with the need for surgical intervention, our patient is directed to the person responsible for the scheduling of surgery and receives the necessary orientation. The main one of these regarding the pre-anesthetic consultation is indispensible, mandatory and should happen at least 48 hours before the programmed surgery or just before emergency procedures.
This consultation allows the doctor to know the health conditions of the person by means of examinations and questions, resolving any doubts and appeasing the fears related to anesthesia. Depending on the person’s state of health, some complementary examinations can be requested in addition to the routine examinations to ensure that the surgery is completed more safely.
It is also during the pre-anesthetic consultation that the doctor decides which kind of anesthesia will be used - local, general or local and sedation
The medical anesthesiologist accompanies the surgery the entire time and constantly verifies the heartbeat rate , respiratory frequency, blood pressure, body temperature and on the completion of surgery the administration of the anesthetics, so that the person recovers gradually to the normal state of conscience.
Soon after the end of surgery and before being taken to their rooms, our patients are taken to the Post-operative recovery room (REPAI) inside the surgery center. They stay in this room to recover from the anesthesia and are monitored by the nurses and other professionals, under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist, and the first post-operative procedures are carried out, before being taken to the rooms.
As cirurgias de Adenoidectomia, Adenoamigdalectomia e Amigdalectomia, entre outras, são realizadas com anestesia geral.
Adenoidectomy, Adenotonsillectomy and Tonsillectomy surgeries, among others, are performed with general anesthesia. Otoplasty, Rhinoplasty, Septoplasty, uvulopalatopharyngealplasty, among others, are performed with local anesthesia and sedation.
CARDIOLOGY
Field of the medicine for the study, evaluation and treatment of diseases and health problems related to the heart.
The Cardiology service at the IPO Hospital offers clinical heart care and pre-operative evaluation for people with cardiac problems that need to be submitted for otorhinolaryngologic (ear, nose and throat) surgical procedures.
When necessary the Cardiologist accompanies the surgery to guarantee tranquility and safety of the patient.
HEAD AND NECK SURGERY
Head and Neck Surgery: specialty for the study, evaluation and treatment of diseases and health problems related to the head and neck region.
This specialty looks at the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of health problems, for example, nodules in the head and neck region (other than inflammatory and acute diseases), thyroid, and also traumatic lesions in the mouth and skin, and larynx, among others.
DERMATOLOGY
Field of the medicine for the study, evaluation and treatment of diseases of the skin.
A Dermatology service is present in the hospital and can carry out a study of the skin and thus diagnose and treat health problems related to the skin in the best possible way. The Dermatologist also does esthetic treatments, among them, Laser, Filling Techniques, Botulinum toxin, and if necessary also monitor pre and post-operative Facial Plastic Surgery.
ENDOCRINOLOGY
Endocrinology operates in conjunction with Otorhinolaryngology in the monitoring of several diseases.
For example:
- Obesity and being overweight causes respiratory difficulties and interferes with the treatment of snoring.
- Metabolic disturbances such as: Increase of cholesterol, triglycerides, and also diabetes directly affecting diseases of the inner ear.
- The treatment of some thyroid diseases can have even better results if carried out by professionals in the areas of Otorhinolaryngology and Endocrinology.
SPEECH THERAPY
This is a science for the study, evaluation and treatment of communication disorders: Voice problems, speaking, reading and writing.
At the IPO Hospital our patients have a Speech Therapy service available to them. Our Speech Therapists carry out various kinds of examinations and treatments, including, Audiometry, Electrocochleography, Otoacoustic Emission, P300 Study, Speech Therapy, Immitanciometry, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential (BAEP), Auditory Processing, Vestibular or Labyrinthine Rehabilitation, Tinnitus, Tubal Rehabilitation, Auditory Therapy Processing, Electronystagmography (ENG or VNG).
GASTROENTEROLOGY
Field of the medicine for the study, evaluation and treatment of diseases and health problems related to the digestive system (mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach and intestine).
Gastroenterology is also available at the IPO Hospital. Excellent medical specialists offer clinical care and carry out examinations that help in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive system, including Gastroesophageal Reflux, which is commonly confused with diseases of the throat.
NUTRITION
This is a science for the study, evaluation and treatment of diet related disorders:
A balanced diet helps in the prevention and treatment of diseases such as the Arterial Hypertension, labyrinth diseases (affecting the inner ear), sleep disturbances (sleep apnea due to the obesity), among others. The Nutritionist produces menus and diets according to the need of each client, working together so that the patient can enjoy life in better health.
NUTROLOGY
Nutrology is a medical specialty that diagnoses, prevents and treats several types of eating disorders.
It helps with the prevention and handling of obesity and its consequences such as diabetes, arterial hypertension and cholesterol changes; malnutrition and specific dietary needs; the diet of infants, children and adolescents, seeking proper growth; diseases affecting general health, food allergies and intolerances, among others.
Nutrology helps various specialties aiming at better suiting the nutritional state of the patients, Otorhinolaryngology being one of them. A patient, who is underweight, overweight or obese, presents greater risk during surgery or treatment.
Obese patients generally do not breath adequately have sleep disturbances such as apnea, lower ventilatory capacity, besides being more prone to the arterial hypertension, cholesterol changes and diabetes.
Those with chronic infections of the upper airways (ear, throat, nose and paranasal sinuses), especially in children, are often with impaired weight in function of these repeated infections.
Poor diet leads to low immunity, repeated infections, malnutrition and a vicious circle is started.
The service is available for infants, children, adolescents and adults up to 25 years old.
ODONTOLOGY
Aiming at complete care of the patient, the IPO Hospital has a team of dentists that offer odontological treatments such as restorations, dental inclusion surgery, esthetic restorations, prosthesises and dental bleaching among others.
In partnership with Otorhinolaryngology, Odontology acts on problems such as pain and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joints, many times confused with ear pain.
Also orthodontic treatments are carried out that may have correlation with otorhinolaryngologic problems, such as mouth breathing, needing multidisciplinary care for the complete resolution of the problems, and also including other specialties like speech therapy.
Furthermore, the treatment of the snoring and obstructive sleep apnea can be carried out with the help of the dentist, using the personalized ready-made intra-oral apparatus, as a new conventional treatment option, with easy adjustment, discreetness and well tolerated by the patients.
PULMONOLOGY
Field of the medicine for the study, evaluation and treatment of lung diseases and problems.
Pulmonology at IPO Hospital IPO cares for all patients with complaints related to the lower airways (lung) and associated to Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) in the treatment of health problems such as chronic cough and wheezing among others.
